Presentation of the Inaugural Ambassador of Ireland Award to René Böll

Announcement of the Ambassador of Ireland – St. Patrick’s Day Award, presented to René Böll

The Embassy of Ireland is delighted to announce the establishment of a new annual award entitled “The Ambassador of Ireland – St. Patrick’s Day Award”. The new accolade was first identified in the 2018 Review of Irish-German Relations, ‘Ireland in Germany - A Wider and Deeper Footprint’. It will be given annually to a resident of Germany in recognition of their work promoting Ireland in Germany. The award is restricted to our “affinity diaspora” – persons who are not themselves Irish, but who have a special affinity for Ireland and who have made an important contribution to German-Irish relations. The accolade can be granted in recognition of activity over a long period, or in response to a specific activity or event. Each year, an Embassy committee will consider potential recipients.

We are pleased to announce that René Böll, the renowned German painter and graphic artist, by unanimous decision, has been conferred with the inaugural award. It recognises the significant role he has played over many years, through his writing and art, in keeping alive the links between Achill and Germany as well as promoting strong relations and mutual understanding between our two countries. We are delighted that he has maintained his childhood connection with Ireland and that the country has been a continuous source of inspiration to him. His appreciation of Ireland and its landscape shines through all his work, and he has continued his family’s tradition of depicting Ireland in a manner that manages to be both familiar, yet new.

His extensive work on the forgotten cillíní on Achill, burial grounds primarily for unbaptised children, is especially noteworthy. Furthermore, he is well known for his works with Chinese and Japanese ink, was one of the first German painters to exhibit in China and is an honorary professor at the art college at Beijing National University.

We would have wished to present the award to René in-person during our annual St. Patrick’s Day reception in March this year; however, due to current circumstances, Ambassador O’Brien conferred the award during a virtual award ceremony on Wednesday, 25th of November 2020.

Ankündigung des “Ambassador of Ireland – St. Patrick’s Day Awards” und dessen Verleihung an René Böll
