Events in the Chicago Consular Region (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota)
7 October: In Search of Weeping Jim will be screened at the Irish American Heritage Center as part of the 'journey Chicago' program at 8pm, and again at iBAM! on Oct 15th & 16th. The story of Alderman James Ambrose Kearns, born in Co. Mayo in 1871 and the iconic Chicago flag.
12 October: The Chicago International Film Festival features four Irish films, through 23 October.
12 November: The Irish American Heritage Center’s Great Irish Book Club convenes to discuss The Magician by Colm Tóibín.
15 October: The Consulate General of Ireland in Chicago hosts an exhibition of 15 banners tracing Seamus Heaney’s journey as a poet and public figure, as part of the Irish Books Arts & Music Celebration, through 16 October.
15 October: Musician, archivist and former Riverdance soloist Niamh Ní Charra performs at the annual fundraiser for Celtic Junction Arts Center in St Paul, Minnesota.
18 October: Also at Celtic Junction Arts Center, ten-member traditional music group Brass Lassie performs a mix of Irish, Scottish and continental tunes.
27 October: Dr Kevin Byrne and Dr Steven Griffith host a discussion of James Mackay’s biography Michael Collins: A Life, with a second opportunity on 10 November.
29 October: The Consulate General of Ireland in Chicago’s Halloween Hooley, hosted in conjunction with the Ireland Network of Chicago and Irish Community Services, features family-friendly cultural activities inspired by the Celtic origins of Oíche Shamhna.
