What is the best way to apply for my passport?

The Passport Service offers a range of convenient channels for applying for your passport. Did you know you can now apply online? Irish citizens can now renew their passport book, renew their Passport Card, or apply for their first Passport Card through our fast and secure Online Passport Renewal Service.

It is important that you choose the right application channel, especially if you are travelling soon. See our up to date turnaround times for more information.

Renewing online is the cheapest and most convenient way to renew your Irish passport. Apply now through our Online Passport Renewal Service. This can be done anywhere in the world, 24 hours per day, 365 days of the year. See eligibility criteria.

If you are not eligible for the online service, or do not wish to submit your application online, you can still apply by post via Passport Express. Application forms can be obtained in a Garda Station or at an An Post office.

Applicants residing in Northern Ireland can obtain an application form for Northern Ireland Passport Express applications from participating Northern Ireland Post Offices.

Once your application form is complete you should submit your applications through your local post office, in Ireland and Northern Ireland

For passport renewals, the Passport Service will aim to complete your application in 15 working days from the date we receive the application. This is subject to the demand at the time of application. Please consult our current turnaround times.

For first time applications or applications to replace lost or stolen passport books, the processing time can take at least 20 working days. Please consult our current turnaround times.

Once your passport application has been submitted, it is not possible to fast track the process. It is therefore very important that you choose the right application channel when you submit your application. See our up to date turnaround times.

Applications submitted by ordinary or registered post will be returned to the applicant and will not be processed.

Anyone renewing a passport who needs to travel sooner than the turnaround time offered by the Online Passport Renewal Service should make an appointment for the public counter at the Passport Service in either Dublin or Cork.

See our up to date turnaround times.

To submit an application at the public counter you must have an appointment. If you don't have an appointment you will not be seen. There are a limited number of appointments per day and proof of travel is required.

Please note that first time applications are subject to a minimum turnaround time of 20 working days regardless of whether they are submitted at a public counter or by Passport Express.

Our Dublin office currently operates on an appointment basis from 9am to 4.50pm, Monday to Friday.

Our Cork office currently operates on an appointment basis from 9am to 4.50pm, Monday to Friday.

Citizens residing overseas can renew their passport online using the Online Passport Renewal Service. Queries regarding all other types of applications should be directed to your nearest embassy or consulate.
