Not yet an Irish Citizen

You must be an Irish citizen to apply for an Irish passport. 

 If you were born abroad you may be able to obtain citizenship in one of the following ways:

  • If one of your parents was born in Ireland you may be entitlement to Irish Citizenship by descent.
  • If one of your grand-parents was born in Ireland or if one of your parents was an Irish Citizen at the time of your birth you may be entitled to Irish Citizenship by obtaining a Foreign Birth Registration Certificate
  •  If you have obtained a certificate of naturalisation. 

The citizenship of certain persons born on the island of Ireland is determined by their parent(s) Citizenship and/or residency in Ireland at the time of their birth.
