Visit by Minister Josepha Madigan T.D.

Ireland’s Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Ms Josepha Madigan T.D. will visit Japan 13 to 17 March 2019.

Her visit is part of the annual global outreach by representatives of the Irish Government for Ireland’s national day, St. Patrick’s Day; this year Government Ministers will travel to more than 50 countries. Minister Madigan will meet with a wide range of important political, economic and cultural contacts while in Japan. She will also meet members of the Irish community and the many friends of Ireland who support the celebrations.

On 15 March, Minister Madigan will hold a bilateral meeting with her Japanese counterpart, Minister for Culture, Ms Keiko Nagaoka.

A number of meetings will be held with Irish trade and investment partners in order to strengthen Ireland’s bilateral economic relationship with Japan. Minister Madigan will also brief JETRO President Mr. Akahoshi, on political and economic developments in Ireland and Europe, including on the topic of Brexit.

Among her many engagements, the Minister will launch a promotional campaign of ‘Irish seafood and Guinness’ at AEON supermarkets, by Bord Bia/The Irish Food Board.

Looking forward to her visit to Japan, Minister Madigan said: Japan and Ireland enjoy very close and friendly relations. I look forward to advancing those ties and marking St Patrick’s Day with the Irish community in Japan and with our many Japanese friends. The ‘I Love Ireland Festival’ in Tokyo is the largest St Patrick’s Day celebration in the entire Asia Region”.

Welcoming Minister Madigan’s visit, the Ambassador of Ireland to Japan, Mr Paul Kavanagh, said: “this will be a wonderful occasion to celebrate the strong links we have with Japan in the cultural field and across many sectors. The recent EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) opens many mutual economic benefits which the Minister will be in a position to promote”.

On Sunday 17 March, St Patrick’s Day, Minister Madigan will lead the 27th Tokyo St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Omotesando Avenue, Harajuku and attend the second day of the ‘I Love Ireland Festival’ in Yoyogi Park. In anticipation of the Irish team competing in the Japan Rugby World Cup, many Saint Patrick’s Day events this year will have a strong rugby component. St. Patrick’s Day, Ireland’s national day, attracts thousands of Japanese people. We invite everyone to join in with the celebrations in this special year!
