Minister of State of Ireland Visits Amman New Camp (Al-Wihdat) in Jordan

H.E Minister James Browne and Ambassador Bolger meeting with students at the Amman Camp Preparatory Girls’ School

The Minister of State of Ireland, His Excellency Mr. James Browne, on Tuesday paid a visit to a Palestine refugee camp in Jordan with United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) officials

The Irish delegation arrived at UNRWA Amman Camp Preparatory Girls’ School where its members and UNRWA officials discussed the Agency’s essential education, relief, health and protection services offered to nearly 2.3 million Palestine refugees in Jordan.

The delegation met first with members of the UNRWA students who are participating with Jordan Young Scientist initiative the students had the opportunity to showcase their projects to the delegation, including the one that took second place overall in the First Jordan Young Scientist Exhibition in 2022. The idea for this year's participating project, "Smart Irrigation," was to create a device that analyses soil moisture and connects it to a water pump that operates using a drip irrigation system. Since this pump operates in accordance with the amount of soil moisture, this device assists in reducing water consumption.

Frontline staff on Agency’s operations in Jordan briefed the delegation and they highlighted the contribution by Ireland to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). This funding assisted UNRWA in addressing the humanitarian and development needs of 5.7 million Palestine refugees across UNRWA’s five fields of operation in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
