The Embassy of Ireland, Berlin is seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic and hardworking person with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to fill a full-time Assistant Public Diplomacy Officer, (Communications and Administrative) position. The successful candidate will become part of a dynamic & fast-paced embassy team and will have opportunities to develop their skills and gain hands-on experience in public diplomacy, social media, event management and office administration in a multinational context.
The successful candidate will be detail-oriented with excellent organisational and communication skills. They will be able to conduct work in both German and English to a high level. They should have a broad understanding of social media platforms and public messaging for a variety of audiences. They should possess a drive, ambition, and motivation to have new experiences working with a range of art forms, social media tools, individuals and groups. They will have strong problem solving skills, a growth mind-set and strong public speaking & presentation skills.
The candidate must provide evidence of excellent interpersonal skills, being persuasive, working in a team but also dealing effectively with people in external organisations. The candidate must have proven ability to build relationships and maintain a network of contacts across academia, think tanks, media & communications organisations and community groups.
The successful candidate may also be called on to support the Ambassador’s Office and the embassy’s consular team during particularly busy periods. The position will also involve undertaking periodic out of hours duty (up to four times a year).
Roles and responsibilities:
This position will include, under the supervision and guidance of the Head of Public Diplomacy, the administration of the Embassy of Ireland’s public outreach programme; managing logistics for meetings & events; liaising with key officials across Germany; management of the embassy’s contacts and relationships with various key interlocutors and liaisons in Germany and Ireland; drafting press releases and public communications; project management, budget tracking and payments administration; procurement of goods & services and liaising with various service providers; and other embassy administrative duties as they may arise.
The work will include:
- Assisting the development, logistics & administration of the embassy’s extensive outreach programme
- Preparation and implementation of the embassy’s outreach visits and public events
- Copywriting for press releases, public communications, and social media
- Assisting in the creation of suitable public messaging for the embassy social media platforms
- Graphic and media design assistance
- Event support, particularly for public-facing activities – including those outside Berlin and/or outside normal working hours
- Administrative support particularly re. public diplomacy and Irish community outreach
- Contact management
- Translation (English-German and German-English)
- Support to other sections of the embassy
- Support to the Ambassador’s Office
Essential requirements candidates must be able to demonstrate:
To be eligible the following qualifications and competences are required:
- A third level qualification in a relevant area or work experience in a relevant area.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in German and English.
- The candidate should be a native speaker of German or English and have a minimum C1 in the other language.
In some cases, applicants may be telephoned in advance to establish language proficiency.

- Strong knowledge of Ireland and a genuine passion and interest in working on its behalf in Germany.
- A high level of administrative skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.
- A flexible attitude, good judgement and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- The ability to work well under pressure while ensuring accuracy and attention to detail.
- A high level of discretion, commitment and reliability.
- Strong problem solving and time management skills
- The successful candidate must have a legal entitlement to live and work in Germany prior to recruitment.
Desirable skills and experience:
- A proven track record of managing social media platforms on a non-personal basis.
- Knowledge and experience of creating and managing social media campaigns.
- An eye for design and some ability to use graphic design and / or media editing software.
- Experience in public communications campaigns.
- Experience in managing a broad range of contacts and overseeing outreach activities.

Working hours: | Full time (35 hours/week) with occasional additional attendance outside of normal office hours |
Salary: | €31,827.70 gross per year |
Annual leave: | 24 leave days per annum |
Probationary period: | 6 months |
