Actor Gabriel Byrne, solicitor Gareth Peirce and Fr. Brendan McBride, founder and head of the Irish Immigration and Pastoral Center in San Francisco, are among the recipients of the Presidential Distinguished Service Awards for the Irish Abroad for 2015. The Presidential Distinguished Service Awards recognise those who have served Ireland with distinction and those who have actively contributed to Ireland in a sustained manner.

Planning is underway for the 2015 Global Irish Economic Forum which will take place from 19 to 21 November. The Forum, organised by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, will bring together more than 300 leading Irish and Irish-connected figures from across the globe to play their part in building on Ireland’s recovery.

Old Communities. New Media. Directed by Dr. Liam Burke, @HOME is a portrait of Melbourne’s ageing Irish community as they embrace social media to narrow the distance between Australia and Ireland. @HOME is a short documentary film that provides a loving portrait of emigrants who moved to the other side of the world when contact with Ireland was limited to occasional letters and a phone call once a year. The film also features Ireland’s Minister for Diaspora Affairs, Jimmy Deenihan T.D.

44 Irish-connected political representatives from Australia, Canada, France, the UK and the USA attended the first-ever Global Irish Parliamentarians’ Forum in Dublin. The two day programme gave participants a number of opportunities to connect with each other and Irish Government contacts.
