EU Human Rights Defenders Award 2018

EU Human Rights Defenders Award 2018

The Head of Cooperation at the Embassy of Ireland in Uganda Mr. Frank Kirwan together with Ambassadors from EU Member states and Norway at the presentation of the EU Human Rights Defenders Award 2018 to the joint winners Ms Margaret Arach Orech from the Uganda Landmine Survivor's Association (ULSA) and Mr. Peter Sewakiryanga  of the Kyampisi Childcare Ministries (KCM).

The award recognizes and honours the achievements of an individual Human Rights Defender, active in Uganda, who has made an outstanding contribution to the promotion and protection of human rights during the past year. Securing the protection and improving the environment in which HRDs operate has been and remains critical in Irish Aid's Development Cooperation engagement in Uganda.

The awards to persons working in the areas of land mines and child sacrifice highlights the strong efforts needed by both government, civil society and communities  to combat these two scourges.
