The Embassy is seeking to recruit a resourceful, proactive and flexible individual with previous experience in a similar environment to fill the position of Consular Officer in the Embassy.  

 

Roles and Responsibilities:

The Consular Officer works on all aspects of consular work for both Thailand and Myanmar. Consular Officers are required to develop detailed knowledge of the various processes for consular services visa applications, passport applications, other consular services and consular assistance. Consular assistance cases in Thailand can be particularly challenging and sometimes distressing. The Consular Officer requires significant interpersonal skills. The Consular Officer also requires the ability to work effectively with Diplomatic and local staff, frequently from different cultures and backgrounds.

 

Training on consular services and mission-specific software programmes will be provided to the successful candidate. The precise range of duties will vary over time according to the needs of the Embassy, but will include the following:

  • Responding to public queries received by the Embassy over telephone and email;
  • Providing excellent customer service at the Embassy’s public office;
  • Taking receipt of, and processing, visa applications for travel to Ireland, in accordance with established guidelines;
  • Providing consular assistance to Irish citizens and their families;
  • Assisting in processing emergency travel documents;
  • Providing support to the Consul and undertaking other administrative and consular tasks as required;
    • Perform occasional translation and interpretation work;
    • Other duties as required from time to time and directed by the Ambassador and Deputy Head of Mission as necessary.

 

Essential Requirements candidates must be able to demonstrate:

  • Candidates must have fluency in both English and Thai;
  • Candidates musthave a degree, preferably in disciplines such as:
    • Business Administration
    • Communications
    • International Relations
    • Other related fields
  • Candidates must have previous professional experience in a customer facing role;
  • Examples demonstrating a good understanding of relevant local Thai laws;
  • Strong customer service orientation, with excellent interpersonal and time management skills;
  • High level of proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite;
  • Experience of working in a team environment; and
  • Examples demonstrating a high level of discretion, commitment, reliability and attention to detail, with thorough follow-through on projects assigned.
  • All applicants must have a permanent legal right to reside and work in the Kingdom of Thailand.

 

Desirable Skills and Experience:

  • A good understanding of the role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy;
  • The successful applicant will work alongside other local employees of the Embassy, and will report directly to the diplomatic staff in the Mission. Previous experience in a diplomatic mission is desirable, but not essential. 

 

Terms and conditions of employment:

  • The successful candidates will be hired on initial 3 year fixed-term contract with a 3 month probation period;
  • Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week, with standard office hours from 09:15-17:30 with some occasional additional hours including some evening and weekend work (A policy of time-off-in-lieu is in place for out-of-hours duty). Where this is necessary, it will be agreed with you in advance. Individuals unable to occasionally work out-of-hours should not apply for this post.
  • Annual Leave entitlement 16 days per annum.
  • The salary for the position is 646,012 Thai Baht per annum, locally on a monthly basis. Salaries are paid direct to a bank account, therefore, the successful candidate must have a bank account.

Selection Process:

  • Depending on the number of applications received, a short-listing of candidates to be called for a competency-based interview may be undertaken based on the Essential/Key Requirements above.
  • It is planned that interviews will be held before the end of August 2023;
  • A skills test may be included in the recruitment process;
  • A second interview may be included in the recruitment process; and
  • A panel may be set up depending on the calibre of candidates;

Security Clearance for Local Staff

Police security clearance will be sought in respect of individuals who come under consideration for appointment. Enquiries may also be made with the police force of any country in which the applicant under consideration for appointment resided. If unsuccessful, this information will be destroyed. If the applicant subsequently comes under consideration for another position, they will be required to supply this information again.
