The Importance of Female Peacekeepers

Ireland has a long and proud tradition of involvement in UN peacekeeping. This includes participation in UN peacekeeping operations in the Democratic Republic of Congo, dating as far back as 1960. Ireland continues to contribute peacekeepers to the current UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Captain Deirdre Carbery is an Irish Infantry Officer currently serving with MONUSCO. She is a Staff Officer in the Information Operations Cell in the Force Headquaters in Goma. She is a trained gender advisor with fourteen years military experience and is serving in her second UN deployment.
