Lost or Stolen Passports
If your passport has been lost or stolen, the best and most convenient way to report the loss of your passport is to immediately apply for a new passport via Passport Online, where you can declare the loss of your passport.
For further guidance on Passport Online, see our information on how to apply.
If you are resident in Great Britain and have lost or mislaid your passport, you can also apply to renew your passport in-person via the Urgent Appointment Service for Passport Renewal. Applicants must first book an appointment to attend the Irish Passport Office in London at 114a Cromwell Road, London, SW7 4ES (the nearest tube station is Gloucester Road).
This is a limited service and slots are allocated by appointment only on a first come, first served basis.
Please note that you do not require a passport to travel between Ireland and Great Britain, however some carriers/airlines require a passport as proof of identification. If you have lost or mislaid your passport, we advise that you check with your airline or carrier to see what form of valid identification they will accept.
Where a passport has been lost and is found by an airline/carrier or another authority, it may be returned to the Passport Service for cancellation. In such cases, your passport will be cancelled by the Passport Service, and will not be returned to you.
If you have reported your passport lost or stolen and subsequently find it, do not use it for travel. You run the risk of being stopped at border crossings, as Interpol keeps a record of all reports of lost or stolen passports.
You should instead return the passport by post to the Passport Service Customer Care at:
114a Cromwell RoadLondon
SW7 4ES
If your passport has been lost or stolen, and you do not wish to apply for a new passport, please notify the London Passport Office that your passport has been lost or stolen here. The Office can also be reached Monday to Friday, 09:30-16:30 at +44 (0)20 7373 4339.
In the event of a genuine emergency, an appointment for an Emergency Travel Certificate can be made at the Irish Passport Office in London by phone (+44 (0)20 7373 4339), or by the Contact Us Form during working hours Monday to Friday, 09.30-16.30.
Genuine emergencies include requiring a passport for travel due to the death or serious illness of a family member, or for emergency medical treatment.
Evidence to support the nature of the emergency will be required before the issuance of any travel document can be considered. The cost for an Emergency Travel Certificate is £26.00. All applications are considered on a case-by-case basis.
Should you require your passport to travel in the event of a genuine emergency out of normal working hours, please leave a voice message for the Duty Officer at 0207 235 2171.
This mailbox is monitored regularly. In the first instance, we advise that you check with your airline or carrier to see what form of valid identification they will accept. Non-emergency cases will not be considered out of hours.
Please note that you do not need to contact the Duty Officer to report a lost or stolen passport unless you require a passport for emergency out of hours travel.
