Public Outreach and Consular Officer/PA – Job Vacancy

The Consulate General of Ireland in Los Angeles is seeking to recruit a resourceful, proactive and flexible individual with previous experience in a similar environment to fill the position of Public Outreach and Consular Officer/PA in the Consulate.

Main responsibilities:

This key role will involve, amongst other functions:

  • Managing, in consultation with the diplomatic staff, the Consulate’s social media strategy, including updating the website and other social media accounts with material related to Consulate activities, including assisting with production of innovative content
  • Working with the Consulate team on event management and delivery of local Consulate cultural events; including working to identify potential partners and initiatives in the creative and sports industries;
  • Assisting with coordinating events and visits including high-level visits and other related protocol functions 
  • Coordinate with relevant external stakeholders, including preparation of external correspondence
  • Manage network of contacts, including maintenance of electronic database
  • Consular services including dealing with public enquiries as required; provision of consular advice to Irish citizens.
  • Other administrative functions related to the operation of the Consulate, including working with the Consul General on diary management, organisation of meetings and travel as required.

Public outreach and Consular Officer/PA Position Details

  • This is a full-time, office-based position. The role is an initial fixed-term 24-month contract, with a 6-month period of probation.
  • Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week, with standard office hours from 09:00am to 5:00pm. The role requires occasional out of hours (weekend and evening) work.
  • The gross salary for this role is $52,524.85 per annum, with annual increments. Salaries are paid direct to a bank account; therefore, the successful candidate must have a bank account.
  • Annual Leave entitlement to 20 days’, plus public holidays, with leave in-lieu for occasional evening/weekend work.
  • A contribution towards the cost of private medical insurance.

 

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate should demonstrate:

  • Previous relevant experience, including professional experience of using social media platforms as part of a communications strategy;
  • A good understanding of local cultural policy and sports;
  • The candidate must be fully fluent in English.
  • Experience of event organisation and delivery.
  • The candidate must demonstrate using work based examples of providing excellent interpersonal skills, being persuasive, working in a team but also dealing effectively with people in external organisations;
  • The candidate must have proven ability to build relationships and maintain a network of contacts across academic, funding agency, industry and public-sector communities;
  • The candidate must provide evidence of flexibility, efficiency and effectiveness showing strong organizational skills, attention to detail, able to work under pressure and to manage multiple tasks; Flexibility with regards occasional working out of hours is essential;
  • The candidate should provide examples of being solutions-oriented, and committed to delivering results, including by adapting approach if necessary;
  • The candidate must demonstrate using examples, their working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel);
  • All applicants must have a permanent legal right to reside and work in the United States of America.

Desirable Skills and Experience:

  • A good understanding of the role of Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs and the Consulate;
  • The successful applicant will work alongside other local employees of the Consulate and will report directly to the diplomatic staff in the Mission. Previous experience in a diplomatic mission is desirable, but not essential.

All applicants must have a permanent legal right to reside and work in the USA (US passport/ US birth certificate/ US naturalization/ valid Green Card). As a US citizen/resident, you are personally subject to US social security and self-employment taxes while employed at the Consulate General of Ireland, Los Angeles.

Selection Process:

  • Depending on the number of applications received, a short-listing of candidates to be called for a competency-based interview may be undertaken based on the Essential/Key Requirements above.
  • It is planned that interviews will be held before the end of September 2022.
  • A skills test may be included in the recruitment process;
  • A second interview may be included in the recruitment process; and
  • A panel may be set up depending on the calibre of candidates.

Security Clearance for Local Staff

Police security clearance will be sought in respect of individuals who come under consideration for appointment. Enquiries may also be made with the police force of any country in which the applicant under consideration for appointment resided. If unsuccessful, this information will be destroyed. If the applicant subsequently comes under consideration for another position, they will be required to supply this information again.
