Appointment of Honorary Consul in Nashville, Tennessee
The Consulate General of Ireland in Atlanta works with Ireland’s Embassy in Washington D.C. and other Irish Consulates and State Agencies to promote and protect Ireland’s interests in the United States. We pursue opportunities that will deliver economic growth and jobs for Ireland. We help maintain and enhance links with our Irish-American diaspora and promote Irish culture in new and traditional forms. We also provide a range of key consular services.
Subject to the agreement of the relevant US authorities, the Consulate General is considering appointing a new Honorary Consul, in the coming months, in Nashville, Tennessee.
This Honorary Consul will provide consular assistance and services to Irish citizens in their areas of accreditation. They will also assist and support the Consulate General in the broader development of economic, business and cultural relations with Tennessee.
The role of an Honorary Consul is by definition honorary. The position is not salaried and is non-pensionable. Candidates should be current legal residents in the United States and must be residents of Tennessee. They must be in a position to provide a suitable premises for the Consulate (more details can be provided on request). Honorary Consuls receive an annual honorarium of €1,125, refund of eligible communication costs associated with the Honorary Consul position, and retain 50% of Consular fees received (up to certain limits).
Expressions of interest, together with a CV, should be sent to the Consulate General at atlantacg@dfa.ie with the heading “Honorary Consul Expression of Interest – Tennessee” by close of business on 10 May 2023.
A short listing process will be carried out on the expressions of interest and a small number of persons may be invited for interview. At this stage, potential candidates will be asked for two written references and to complete a number of forms including a security vetting form.
The following categories of person cannot be considered for the role:
- Individuals who occupy a public or governmental position;
- Those who may be unable to deliver consular services due to other commitments;
- Anyone who is politically active;
- Persons with a real, apparent or potential conflict of interest
Essential requirements:
- Resident in the Nashville area
- Availability to provide consular services during weekdays
- Ability to provide suitable premises
Desirable requirements:
- Familiarity with Irish and the Tennessee/US administrative systems
- Involvement with the Irish community in the region
