How to Apply for a Passport

Apply Online

This is the fastest and cheapest way to get your first Irish passport or renew your passport. Once you have your photo, it only takes about ten minutes!

Passport Online is the only way to apply for an Irish Passport in your country.

Passport Online will return your passport book, passport card and relevant supporting documentation directly to you.

Apply Online

If you are resident in Shanghai, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Zhejiang or Anhui, you should submit an APS2 application form to the Consulate General of Ireland in Shanghai.

APS2 forms are available:

  • By contacting us. You should send your address in Chinese characters, and your mobile telephone number. The form will be sent to you by courier (charges of around 30 RMB must be paid on delivery).
  • By collecting a form from the Consulate offices in Shanghai.

The fee depends on the type of passport you apply for:

*This fee applies to both Emergency Travel Certificates and emergency passports.

**The fee is additional to the fee for the passport itself.

***This a standard consular fee that is charged for the verification or certification of any document

Emergency Passports

Please contact us if you think you need an emergency passport. You should note that in order to exit China on a new passport, you must apply to your local Entry-Exit Management Bureau for an exit visa. This process takes at least five working days and the Embassy has no role in this.

Courier Fee

  • Courier fee – RMB30

Fees for Passport applications lodged in Shanghai may be paid in cash, by Chinese postal order or by bank draft. Please only pay in cash if you are paying directly at the Embassy.

Postal orders should be made out to: 爱尔兰领事馆 (The Consulate of Ireland). The applicants name and date of birth should be written in the comments at the bottom of the postal order.

Bank drafts must be made out to: Department of Foreign Affairs, Ireland. The applicants name and date of birth should be written on the back of the bank draft.

In the event the application is for a child please have the name of the buyer of the postal order or bank draft written on the back.

The Consulate cannot accept payment by personal cheque or Euro cash.

The public office of the Consulate is open from Monday to Friday, 09:30-12:30 and from 13:30-16:30.  If you choose to post your application, we strongly recommend that you use registered mail or a reputable courier service. The Consulate cannot be held responsible for applications or documents lost in transit.
