The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Defence Simon Coveney is visiting Helsinki and Stockholm tomorrow. During his visit, the Minister will meet with Finland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto, with Finland’s Defence Minister Antti Kaikkonen and with Sweden’s Foreign Minister Ann Linde.

On 18 June 1972, 118 people – among them 12 prominent Irish businessmen - tragically lost their lives in an air crash shortly after they took off from Heathrow airport on their way to Brussels, in what became known as the Staines Air Disaster. The crash remains the worst air accident in British aviation history.

On this day, we remember all those who lost their lives in the course of the Troubles. The profound loss felt by the families who lost loved ones, and by their communities, is immense. These deaths not only changed the course of history on this island, they also left a legacy of loss and pain for so many to bear.

I am hugely disappointed that the British government is continuing to pursue its unlawful unilateral approach on the Protocol on Northern Ireland. This is not the way to find sustainable solutions to the genuine concerns of people and business in NI and only adds to uncertainty.
