Minister Cannon welcomes launch of Blazing a Trail: Lives and Legacies of Irish Diaspora Women
Press release20 November 2018
The Blazing a Trail exhibition celebrates the lives and legacies of 21 pioneering Irish diaspora women of the 19th and 20th centuries who blazed a trail in a wide range of fields.
The exhibition is part of a collaborative project with EPIC, Herstory and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade as part of its diaspora engagement work. It runs from November 12th to 25th November at EPIC and the intention is that the Exhibition will reach a global audience by travelling to Irish Embassies and Consulates abroad, over the coming years, affording these pioneering women’s life stories the recognition they deserve.
The exhibition marks the centenary of partial women’s suffrage, the right of Irish women to vote in elections at a time when Ireland was still under British rule. It recognises the endeavours of individual Irish women across the globe who struggled for their own professional recognition, and for justice and equality for others.
Speaking ahead of this evening’s launch, Minister Cannon said:
“The Blazing a Trail exhibition is a timely celebration of the achievements of Irish women in the fields of arts, sciences, sport and humanitarian work worldwide. The twenty one women featured in the exhibition led extraordinary lives, yet they are only a small sample of the many outstanding Irish women who made significant contributions both at home and abroad. This exhibition is a fantastic way of honouring and celebrating those women.”
This exciting project has been many months in the making and the Minister congratulates everyone involved for having developed a new and innovative way of capturing the voices of Irish emigrants so as to foster greater connections between those at home and those abroad.
“Particular thanks is due to Dr Angela Byrne, who led in developing this exhibition in her role as the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, historian in residence. The funding of the historian in residence position at Epic is a new and innovative project for the Department and we very much look forward to future collaborations.”
