Tánaiste attends EU Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg to discuss Security and Defence, Yemen, Horn of Africa/Red Sea, the EU Global Strategy and Jordan
The Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr. Simon Coveney T.D., is in Luxembourg today to attend a meeting of EU Foreign Affairs Ministers. Ministers will discuss security and defence, and will be briefed on the situation in Yemen by the UN Special Envoy. The Council will then discuss developments in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, the implementation of the EU Global Strategy and Jordan.
Speaking in advance of the meeting, the Tánaiste said:
“Ministers will discuss security and defence issues. Ireland has played an active role in shaping the Common Security and Defence Policy to equip the EU to act as an effective international peace provider in support of the UN.
The UN Special Envoy on Yemen, Martin Griffiths will brief the Council on his efforts to prepare a framework for peace negotiations. Ireland fully supports the efforts of the UN Special Envoy and his team as they work towards a peace agreement.
Following this, the Council will have an opportunity to discuss how the EU can step up its engagement in the Horn of Africa/Red Sea region. Ministers will then consider progress on the implementation of the EU Global Strategy, two years since its launch. Finally, there will be a discussion on Jordan, and I look forward to debriefing the Council on my recent visit there.”
