Statement by Minister Flanagan on the outcome of the UK General Election
As the final results come through from the count for the UK General Election, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Charlie Flanagan T.D. said he looked forward to a constructive working relationship with Prime Minister David Cameron’s incoming government with particular reference to Northern Ireland, foreign affairs and bilateral trade.
The Minister said:
“I join the Taoiseach in congratulating Prime Minister Cameron and indeed all those elected across all parts of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
“As Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, my working relations with both the British Foreign Secretary and the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland have been very close and constructive, involving regular and in-depth engagement, in particular in Belfast, London and Brussels.
“We have important work to do together in the coming months on many key issues. In particular, I, with my British counterpart, will be actively engaging with the parties in Northern Ireland to ensure successful implementation of the Stormont House Agreement, which our two Governments and the NI Executive parties worked hard together to achieve last December.
“I will be engaging closely with the incoming Foreign Secretary to enhance the close bilateral relationship and our partnership in international fora where our two countries are grappling with many global challenges.
“I look forward to early meetings with the incoming Foreign Secretary and the incoming Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.”
