Minister meets Federica Mogherini, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy12/1/15
Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Charlie Flanagan, TD, today met with Federica Mogherini, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and Vice-President of the European Commission.
High Representative Mogherini is paying a one day visit to Dublin. Later this evening she will deliver a keynote address to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Conference, Representing the Global Island, in Dublin Castle.
Speaking after their meeting Minister Flanagan said:
“I was very pleased to welcome Federica Mogherini to Dublin for the first time since her appointment as EU High Representative. As the voice of the EU in foreign policy matters, Ms. Mogherini is an extremely important voice on the world stage and we are honoured to welcome her to Dublin.
“This afternoon we discussed a wide range of issues including the appalling attacks in Paris last week, the Middle East Peace Process, the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, international efforts to address the Ebola outbreak, and the development by the United Nations of a new global development agenda to succeed the Millennium Development Goals, a process in which Ireland is playing a leading role.
“The attacks in Paris last week resonated strongly in many countries, including Ireland, where freedom of expression is highly prized and violence rightly abhorred.
“One lesson from the terrible events in France is that we must remain vigilant and continue to update our efforts to tackle this challenge effectively, nationally, and with our international partners.”
Minister Flanagan continued by saying:
“A key pillar of Ireland’s international engagement is our input into the shaping of a shared European foreign policy, which the High Representative is tasked with coordinating and implementing.
“Working through the European Union, Ireland’s voice in international affairs is greatly amplified and the opportunities to promote our interests and values appreciably enhanced.
“I look forward to hearing further from the High Representative this evening when she will address the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Conference 2015 in Dublin Castle.
“This conference, organised by my Department, will see Ireland’s Ambassadors, Consul Generals and senior diplomats from 80 locations around the world join colleagues from across the public and private sector to consider how best my Department and, in particular, Ireland’s diplomatic network, can advance the Government’s priorities and provide a first-rate service to Irish citizens and businesses around the world.”
