Minister Jimmy Deenihan visits Australia to meet Irish community and promote trade18 November 2014
Minister for the Diaspora Jimmy Deenihan T.D., begins a visit to Australia today to lead an Enterprise Ireland trade mission and meet with members of the Irish community and organisations providing support to emigrants.
Some 70,000 Irish-born people live in Australia, many of whom benefit from the welfare, heritage and cultural programmes which are run with support from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Emigrant Support Programme (ESP). Almost €420,000 was provided to 16 community organisations in 2013 under this programme. During the visit, Minister Deenihan will visit a number of these organisations to see the impact of the funding.
In Sydney, he will visit the Irish Australian Welfare Bureau, which provides assistance to vulnerable Irish citizens, particularly the elderly or those in difficulty. In Brisbane he will meet members of the Irish Australian Support Association Queensland, while in Perth he will visit the Claddagh Association. In Melbourne Minister Deenihan will visit the Australian Irish Support and Resource Bureau, which is the oldest Irish community support organisation operating in Australia, to meet Irish senior citizens and the mothers and toddlers’ group.
From Friday next, [November 21], Minister Deenihan will lead an Enterprise Ireland trade mission involving innovative Irish construction and engineering companies in an effort to boost trade between the two countries. The Minister will visit both Perth and Brisbane during the trade mission, which has been organised by Enterprise Ireland in cooperation with the Embassy of Ireland in Canberra and Consulate in Sydney.
He will have a series of high-level meetings with business organisations and with Irish companies and their Australian partners and customers.
The Minister will also attend the AFL-GAA International Rules Match in Perth, as well as a networking event organised by the Irish Australian Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber provides a mentoring programme and career support for young Irish people in Australia, which is supported by the Emigrant Support Programme.
In Perth the Minister will officially open the new Honorary Consulate of Ireland for Western Australia, which will provide services to Irish citizens in the region.
