Tánaiste to discuss forthcoming European elections with President Hollande in Paris

The Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Eamon Gilmore, T.D., is meeting with the French President, Francois Hollande, in Paris this morning for talks that will focus on the economy and Europe-wide elections to the European Parliament in May.

The Tánaiste and President Hollande will also discuss imminent leadership changes in the EU institutions which will see Martin Schulz and José Manuel Barroso replaced as presidents of the European Parliament and European Commission, respectively, in mid-2014.

This morning’s meeting at the Elysée Palace is one of a series of high-level political engagements with members of the French administration during the Tánaiste’s three-day visit to the French capital.

The Tánaiste will also meet with French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault this morning to discuss the economic situation in Europe, and other EU-related issues including the completion of Banking Union.

Yesterday, the Tánaiste held talks with French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius on the deepening political crisis in Ukraine and the ongoing humanitarian crises in Syria, Mali and the Central African Republic.
