Women and Liberation Struggles - Exhibition and Panel Discussion
The Embassy of Ireland in Tanzania will host a Panel Discussion and Exhibition at the National Museum in Dar es Salaam on ‘Women in Liberation Struggles’ on Thursday, May 19th at 17.30.
Ireland is commemorating the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Rising that began the revolutionary period leading to Ireland's independence. Over 300 women participated in the Rising but many of their contributions were lost from the historical record immediately following Independence. Tanzanian women also played an important role in Tanzania’s liberation struggle but their contribution also risks being written out of history.
The Embassy will bring together a distinguished panel to discuss the role of women in revolution and how their legacy is diminished over time. Dr Mary McAuliffe, an Irish academic, historian and expert on Women in 1916 will deliver a short lecture on the Irish Experience. This will be followed by a panel discussion with Biubwa Amour Zahor, Zanzibar political activist during the Independence period, Prof. Penina Mlama, Mwalimu JK Nyerere Professorial Chair of Pan-African Studies at University of Dar es Salaam and Eda Sanga, first woman journalist in TBC and Executive Director of Tanzania Media Women Association. The discussion will be moderated by journalist and filmmaker Tulanana Bohela.
The lecture will be in English with the panel discussion in Kiswahili (Please note that translation will be provided). The discussion will be followed by an exhibition on the Women of 1916 and a reception.
