Ambassador Gilsenan plants a tree for Ireland - UN@70
The 70th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations was celebrated with the planting of over 2000 trees in Maruwa, on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. Ambassador Gilsenan planted a tree representing Ireland.
The tree planting event brought together Government, the UN, development partners, diplomatic corps, and the public, and highlighted the theme “One planet, 7 billion people, environment protection is our responsibility”.
As part of the event, Ambassador Gilsenan planted a tree representing Ireland, which is celebrating sixty years as a member of the United Nations this year. Ireland’s support for the UN has focused strongly on peacekeeping, promoting human rights, and on advancing human development; in 2015, Ireland served as co-chair with Kenya, in the final round of negotiations on the post-2015 development agenda.
Support for the United Nations accounts for 42% of Ireland’s Multilateral Official Development Assistance. In Tanzania, the Embassy of Ireland has provided €6.8 million to UN agencies and programmes over the past five years, including UNICEF and UNDP, and is supporting UN programming in health, nutrition and democratic empowerment.
