Ambassador Orla O’Hanrahan has now completed her posting as the 18th Ambassador of Ireland to the Kingdom of Sweden.
I have now concluded my posting as Ambassador of Ireland in Sweden and had the honour recently of paying a courtesy call on H.M. King Carl XII Gustav, as well as meeting with State Secretary Annika Soder and others at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I would like to thank the Swedish authorities for their kindness and courtesy from the time of my arrival in the beautiful city of Stockholm in January, 2015, along with my husband, Claude Malone. Our children, Kate and Matthew, visited several times and I know that they will keep in touch with a city and country for which they also developed great affection and regard. I have now moved to Athens to take up new duties here and in the region. I should express thanks also to my colleagues in the Diplomatic Corps for their friendship, as well as our group of Women Ambassadors in Stockholm. Let me acknowledge also the excellent cooperation and friendship of the Swedish Ambassador to Ireland, H.E. Anna Brandt and her predecessor, H.E. Ulrika Sundberg.
During my time in Sweden I worked closely with Enterprise Ireland, Bord Bia, Tourism Ireland, Literature Ireland and Culture Ireland, along with other agencies, as we sought to extend and deepen our bilateral relations at every level. I would like to thank those colleagues also for their support and cooperation over that time. We did this through Ministerial visits, discussions on a range of policy issues between senior officials, events with Irish companies, business initiatives- including the tourism and food sectors- and cultural programmes. During that time, there have been new challenges for the European Union, but Sweden and Ireland are working closely together as we address those challenges and find new opportunities for partnership. Recalling the sad events of last April, we stood with our Swedish friends after the tragic events in Drottninggatan, an attack on the freedom and democracy which underpins the values of both our countries.
There are many highlights that come to mind from our time in Sweden: visiting different parts of the country, exploring Stockholm’s Archipelago by boat, and learning about Swedish traditions in each season of the year, marking the Centenary of 1916, celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in the Maritime Museum, walking with the Swedish-Irish Society and many others in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade through the city, attending games with the Stockholm Gaels, enjoying the productions of the Spuds and Sill theatre company, learning about the work of the Celtic Studies Department at Uppsala University, welcoming Irish artists to Sweden, working with colleagues in KTH and other institutions during Ireland’s Year of Design in 2015, equestrian events and welcoming Ireland’s delegation for the Eurovision Song Contest last year to name just some. We are proud of course of our Irish Nobel Laureates and so it was a special pleasure to meet and welcome Professor William Campbell, a graduate of Trinity College Dublin, when he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine. We are also grateful to the Vasa Museum for “greening” the Vasa for the first time! One of the happiest images of the EURO soccer championships in 2016, was the sight of the Swedish and Irish football fans enjoying the events together and the warm atmosphere between them.
Finally, I would like to thank our wonderful team at the Embassy for their constant commitment, enthusiasm and hard work- I could not have done my job without them and am very proud of all they do to provide our customer service and to promote the Sweden-Ireland relationship. That team was led by Louise Smyth, now Chargé d’Affaires, along with Jennie Foley, Mila Taheri Hagh, Rebecka Ingimarsdottir, Cathy Castillo and Torulf Lindell. I would like to express my warm appreciation to Louise and her predecessors for all their friendship and assistance. I know that my colleague Ambassador Dympna Hayes will enjoy the same support and know too that she is looking forward to returning to Sweden where she served in the past. I extend every good wish to her when she takes up her new post in September.

Jag har nu avslutat min tjänstgöring som Irlands ambassadör i Sverige och nyligen hade jag äran att göra en artighetsvisit hos Kung Carl XVI Gustaf samt ha ett möte med statssekreterare Annika Söder och andra på Utrikesdepartementet. Jag skulle vilja tacka de svenska myndigheterna för deras vänlighet och artighet sedan jag anlände i den vackra staden Stockholm i januari 2015 tillsammans med min man Claude Malone. Våra barn, Kate och Matthew, har besökt oss ett flertal gånger och jag vet att de kommer att fortsätta ha kontakt med staden och landet som de har utvecklat stor tillgivenhet och respekt för. Jag har nu flyttat till Aten för att påbörja ett nytt uppdrag både här och i regionen. Jag skulle även vilja tacka mina kollegor i den diplomatiska kåren och vår grupp av kvinnliga ambassadörer i Stockholm för deras vänskap. Låt mig även uppmärksamma det utmärkta samarbetet och vänskapen med den svenska ambassadören till Irland, Anna Brandt och hennes föregångare, Ulrika Sundberg.
Under min tid i Sverige har jag arbetat nära Enterprise Ireland, Bord Bia, Tourism Ireland, Literature Ireland och Culture Ireland, samt andra myndigheter, då vi försökt utvidga och fördjupa våra bilaterala relationer på alla nivåer. Jag skulle även vilja tacka dem för deras stöd och samarbete under denna tid. Vi gjorde detta genom ministerbesök, diskussioner om en rad politiska frågor mellan högre tjänstemän, evenemang med irländska företag, affärsinitiativ – inklusive turism och livsmedelssektorer – och kulturprogram. Under den tiden har det uppkommit nya utmaningar för den Europeiska Unionen, men Sverige och Irland arbetar nära tillsammans när vi adresserar dessa utmaningar och hittar nya möjligheter för partnerskap. Under de sorgliga och tragiska händelserna i april i år stod vi tillsammans med våra svenska vänner på Drottninggatan, det var en attack mot friheten och demokratin, som ligger till grund för värderingarna i våra länder.
Det finns många höjdpunkter från vår tid i Sverige: att besöka olika delar av landet, upptäcka Stockholms skärgård i båt, att lära sig om svenska traditioner under varje årstid, markera hundraårsdagen av 1916, fira St. Patrick’s Day på Sjöhistoriska museet, gå tillsammans med Svensk-Irländska Föreningen och många andra i St. Patrick’s Day paraden genom staden, närvara vid Stockholm Gaels matcher, njuta av teaterföretaget Spuds and Sills produktioner, lära sig om arbetet på avdelningen för keltiska språk vid Uppsala Universitet, välkomna irländska artister till Sverige, arbeta med kollegor på KTH och andra institutioner under Irlands designår 2015, hästevenemang samt att välkomna Irlands delegation till Eurovision Song Contest förra året för att nämna några. Vi är stolta över vår irländska nobelpristagare och det var ett särskilt nöje att träffa och välkomna professor William Campbell, som tog examen vid Trinity College Dublin, när han tilldelades nobelpriset för medicin. Vi är även tacksamma att Vasamuseet färgade Vasaskeppet grönt för första gången! En utav de lyckligaste bilderna under Europamästerskapet i fotboll 2016 var på svenska och irländska fotbollsfans som tillsammans njöt av evenemanget och den varma atmosfären mellan dem.
Slutligen skulle jag vilja tacka vårt underbara team på ambassaden för deras ständiga engagemang, entusiasm och hårda arbete. Jag skulle inte kunnat göra mitt jobb utan dem och jag är väldigt stolt över allt de gör för vår kundservice och för att främja Sveriges och Irlands relation. Det teamet leddes av Louise Smyth, nu Chargé d’Affaires, och bestod av Jennie Foley, Mila Taheri Hagh, Rebecka Ingimarsdottir, Cathy Castillo och Torulf Lindell. Jag skulle vilja uttrycka min högsta uppskattning till Louise och hennes föregångare för deras vänskap och assistans. Jag vet att min kollega ambassadör Dympna Hayes kommer att ha samma stöd och att hon ser fram emot att återvända till Sverige där hon har tjänstgjort tidigare. Jag önskar henne all lycka till nu när hon ska påbörja sitt nya uppdrag i september.
Jag hoppas att alla ni som läser detta får en bra fortsatt sommar och önskar er alla en bra framtid.
