Ambassador Cooney cuts the ribbon at the opening of Primark’s 2nd largest store in the world, in Madrid

Ambassador Cooney attended the opening of Primark’s flagship store in Spain, on the Gran Via in Madrid. It is the second largest Primark in the world, after the one in Manchester, with 5 floors and a showroom at the top. Primark’s success story in Spain continues, as they now have 40 stores around the country and employ more than 7,300 people.

The Embassy is delighted to inform friends and colleagues that Madrid's Bloomsday Society will hold its next reading of James Joyce’s Ulysses on Wednesday 28th October from 7-9pm at the new location of the Ateneo de Madrid, in the Salas del Palomar (Library), Calle del Prado 21.

Creative Connexions is a three-day, two-country, multi-venue showcase of Irish and Catalan Culture.

International Juvenile Gaelic Football Tournament Madrid

The Madrid Harps Club have organised an International Juvenile Gaelic Football Tournament to take place over the weekends of the 10th and 25th October in Madrid. There will be teams participating from Madrid, Ireland, Scotland, England and Belgium. ‌

Ambassador Cooney opens major R&D centre at Irish dairy plant

Ambassador Cooney was delighted to attend the opening by Ornua, one of Ireland’s leading dairy co-operatives of a major new research and development facility in the Spanish town of Ávila. The new centre will assist the co-operative to develop new product lines and formats and to significantly increase the size and scale of its operations in southern Europe.

Major partnership for Irish group to build Canary Islands’ first offshore training centre

1 April 2015

Ambassador Cooney travelled to Gran Canaria on 27 March to participate in ceremonies to announce a major partnership between the National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI), Irish company SEFtec and the Canaries-based Grupo Stier. NMCI and SEFtec, both Cork-based, will design, build and run an offshore survival training centre in the Canary Islands as part of €3 million investment by Grupo Stier.

Ambassador pays working visit to Tenerife for meetings with local authorities

Ambassador David Cooney visited Tenerife on 5th and 6th February for a programme of meetings with the local authorities and to review Ireland’s consular operations on the island. He met with the President of the Canarian Parliament, the Mayor of Santa Cruz, the Government Delegate, the Canaries Tourism Minister, and the President of the Tenerife Island Council (“Cabildo”).

Embassy Madrid busiest in the world for consular assistance in 2014

For another year the Embassy in Madrid has been Ireland’s busiest Embassy worldwide for consular assistance, dealing with a fifth of all cases dealt with by Embassies globally, and reflecting the large numbers of Irish citizens who chose Spain as their preferred holiday destination.
