Global Greening 2015

From 16-21st March, three iconic monuments in the Lisbon area lit the night skies with their sparkling emerald cloaks of light. Yes, Lisbon again joined 125 other famous international sites as part of Tourism Ireland’s “Global Greening” Campaign.

Two of the monuments had a distinct Irish resonance - the Museu Condes de Castro de Guimarães was built by Jorge O’Neill, the direct descendent of Hugh O’Neill of Tyrone, as his family home, while the statue of the Duque da Terceira is at the epicentre of the Cais do Sodré area where the Irish merchants established their trading houses in past centuries. The third site, the Sanctuary of Cristo Rei [Christ the King] monument overlooks the stately Tagus River and all areas of the greater Lisbon region.
