Payment

Nigeria is attractive for exporters as in many cases goods are required to be paid before shipment. For contractors in the country, the situation is more difficult.

In terms of general advice:

  • Have payments in instalments based on clear deliverables
  • Agree on a penalty for late payments in your contract
  • Assess the clients you are working with and invest in building up a relationship with them.

If necessary, you may wish to ask your Irish debt collecting partner whether they have a partner in Nigeria. Alternatively you can get a debt recovery firm recommended in Nigeria. If your debt collection case is not resolved through negotiations, the ultimate choice is to go to court to retrieve the money. However this is a lengthy and costly option.

Direct payments in foreign currency to your Irish account might involve getting a NOTAP certificate; one for the contract you've made and others for the approval of every invoice. This applies to companies supplying (innovative) technologies. More information on NOTAP and the technical transfer agreements can be found on their website.
