Embassy supports Kenya's 2017 Elections Process
Kenya is scheduled to hold elections in August 2017. A number of donors, including Ireland are helping the election process through support to the UNDP Strengthening the Electoral Processes in Kenya (SEPK) project.
The backdrop to the 2017 elections is Kenya's new constitution which was adopted in August 2010. This new Constitution established a far reaching devolved government system. Each of Kenya's 47 counties now has its own devolved local government administration system with its own county assembly, and executive governorship.
Ireland will provide €100,000 to the SEPK which is also being supported by other donor partners such as the EU, US and UK.
UNDP is the designated implementing agency with close engagement with other collaborating partners including UN agencies such as UN Women, and the UN Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
Project activities and results will focus around four main areas: i) strengthened institutional and legal framework for the electoral processes; ii) strengthened participation of voters, parties and candidates in the electoral process with emphasis on women, youth and disabled; iii) delivery of more efficient, transparent and peaceful elections; and iv) strengthened electoral justice.
