Visit of Minister of State Kathleen Lynch T.D. to Israel

Last week the Embassy was honoured and delighted to host a visit by the Minister for State at the Department of Health, Kathleen Lynch T.D. The Minister is responsible for Primary Care, Social Care and Mental Health. The main purpose of the Minister’s visit was to give the keynote speech at Beit Issie Shapiro’s 6th Annual Conference on Disabilities in Tel Aviv on Tuesday 7 July.

You will no doubt have seen the headlines.  The news propelled Ireland to the front pages across the globe.  In what is regarded at home and abroad as a dramatic statement about Ireland today, the same-sex marriage referendum was endorsed 62:38 and in 43 out of 44 constituencies.

It is a big day in Ireland today.  People are going to the polls in a referendum to decide on same-sex marriage.  If it is endorsed, it will be the first same-sex marriage to be approved through a public plebiscite.  There is also a proposal to lower the age of eligibility for the Office of the President.  And there is a by-election in Carlow-Kilkenny.

I am delighted to let you know that the Annual Beckett Lecture is fast approaching and this year we have a real treat. Prof. Linda Ben Zvi at Tel Aviv University, the inspiration and energy behind this event, has organised a one night only performance on 8th June of Beckett’s masterpiece Krapp’s Last Tape with one of Israel’s leading actors. After the performance there is an inter-active discussion with the audience. The details will be sent to you shortly.

Of Christmas Truces and Peace Deals: Ambassador’s Message

On the brink of Christmas, peace building in Northern Ireland received a major boost with agreement between the parties on how to resolve outstanding issues on the budget, parades and dealing with the past. Minister Flanagan and his team worked hard with the parties and their British counterparts to bring this about.
