Authenticating documents

Overview

Governments and organisations sometimes require that documents issued abroad be apostilled or authenticated before they can accept them.

Consular Section of the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade of Ireland can apostille or authenticate Irish documents for use in Canada. These can be verified on Ireland’s E-Registrar.

Canadian Global Affairs can apostille or authenticate Canadian documents. The Consulate General of Ireland can then authenticate these for use in Ireland.

The Consulate General Vancouver can legalise certain Canadian documents for use in Ireland. We can also certify copies of Irish passports and original public documents produced at the Consulate General through our appointment system. 

Apostilling Irish Documents

Public Offices providing apostilled or authenticated Irish documents are located in the Passport Offices in Dublin and Cork. A guide to what documents can be authenticated is on the website https://www.dfa.ie/travel/our-services/authenticating-documents/.

Verification of Irish Apostilles and Authentications (E-Registrar)

The online electronic register enables you to verify the authenticity of an Apostille or Authentication issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Ireland.

Legalisation of Canadian Documents for use in Ireland

Public documents issued in Vancouver, British Columbia, may need to be legalised for use in Ireland. The documentmust:

  1. Be authenticated by Canadian Global Affair in Ottawa.
  2. Be authenticated by the Consulate General of Ireland, Vancouver by Contacting Us

Certified Copies of Irish Documents

The Consulate General can certify a copy of your Irish passport if you submit the original. 

The Consulate General can certify a copy of an original Irish public document apostilled or authenticated by the Consular Section of the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade of Ireland.

Consulate General’s Fee’s

The Consulate General charges a $55 CAD fee for legalisation of Canadian documents or certified copies of Irish documents.

Payment can be made by Canadian bank draft, payable in Canadian Dollars, only. Euro’s are not accepted.

Bank drafts should be payable to the Consulate General of Ireland, Vancouver.
