Bloomsday in Hong Kong: visit by Mr Robert Berry – Comic Artist, Illustrator, Joycean

Every year on 16 June, Bloomsday - a celebration of the life and work of Irish writer James Joyce and his masterpiece Ulysses - is marked around the world. This year in celebration of Bloomsday, the Consulate General of Ireland, the Irish Chamber of Commerce and the Hong Kong International Literary Festival invited Mr Robert Berry to visit Hong Kong and Macau.

Robert Berry has deep experience of Joyce’s work, and has created a graphic novel version of Ulysses (Ulyssesseen) and illustrated Joyce’s famous and influential short story, The Dead.

At the main event on 16 June, Mr Berry spoke of his experience of adapting Ulysses, at Comix Home Base, and afterwards fans of the book gave give readings and played music from the novel. Mr Berry also gave talks at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and at the German Swiss International School earlier in the day. An exhition of Mr Berry’s illustrations for The Dead was shown at Comix Home Base on 16-17 June 2015.

On 17 June, Mr Berry visited Macau, where he visited the Macau Design Centre and Art for All Society and met with the organisers of the Macau Literary Festival.
