Statement by Minister of European Affairs Thomas Byrne T.D.

Today, 27 November, is an international Day of Solidarity with the political prisoners of Belarus.

There are almost 900 political prisoners currently detained by the regime of Alexander Lukashenko. 26 Irish politicians have “adopted” political prisoners in Belarus, the second highest number of any country.

Minister of State for European Affairs, Thomas Byrne, T.D., commented:

“The Irish Government, Irish TDs and Senators, and the Irish people, have been unwavering in our support for a democratic transition for Belarus. This reflects our close links to the Belarusian people, especially in light of the important work done by the Chernobyl Children International charity over the years.

We again call on Mr Lukashenko to release all political prisoners and engage in dialogue with the opposition in advance of free and fair elections.”
