Minister McEntee to attend General Affairs Council Meeting
Press release16 September 2019
The Minister of State for European Affairs, Helen McEntee T.D., will today attend the General Affairs Council meeting in Brussels.
Speaking ahead of the meeting, the Minister said:
“I’m looking forward to meeting with our EU partners where we will discuss the progress made and the next steps in the negotiations on the EU budget for the period 2021-27 (the multi-annual financial framework). The next EU budget will be a vital tool to help the Union to meet our shared challenges. I will reiterate the importance that Ireland attaches to the Common Agricultural Policy. We believe that the traditional priorities of CAP and Cohesion are central to the future of the EU. We must maintain funding for these, along with funding for newer priorities such as climate action and migration.
“We will also start preparation for next month’s European Council meeting and will take the opportunity to meet with EU counterparts to discuss Brexit developments. I continue to be extremely grateful to all our EU Partners for their continuing strong solidarity throughout the Brexit process.”
Along with her ministerial colleagues, Minister McEntee will engage in a policy debate about enhancing respect for the rule of law in the European Union. In addition, the Council will include a hearing on values of the Union in Hungary.
