Minister Flanagan welcomes appointment of Mr Kevin Vickers as Canadian Ambassador to Ireland

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Charlie Flanagan, TD, confirmed that at his request, the Government today approved the nomination by the Canadian government of Kevin Vickers as Canadian Ambassador to Ireland.

Minister Flanagan said:

“I believe that Mr. Vickers will be an excellent Ambassador and a great friend of Ireland during his time with us. He has a strong Irish-Canadian background, is a very good friend of the Embassy of Ireland in Ottawa and his family have been involved in Irish affairs in New Brunswick for many years.

"I will be speaking this evening with my Canadian counterpart, Foreign Minister John Baird, to formally convey the Government’s decision and to say that I look forward to welcoming Mr Vickers to Ireland shortly.

"Minister Baird visited Dublin last October, when we agreed to work closely together to enhance Irish-Canadian relations, including in relation to two-way trade which has shown double-digit growth in recent years. Kevin Vickers’ appointment represents a great boost to this work."

Minister Flanagan further commented:

“His appointment is testament to Mr Vickers’ long years of service to the people of Canada, most recently as Sergeant-at-Arms at Canada’s House of Commons. No-one can forget that in October 2014, he was commended by all Canadian political parties for his central role arising from the attack on the Parliament and the main war memorial in Ottawa."
