The Tánaiste welcomed the Economic Package for Northern Ireland announced by British Prime Minister David Cameron and First Minister Peter Robinson and deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness in London today.

The Tánaiste said: “I spoke with Secretary of State Theresa Villiers this afternoon and commended her on the package announced in Downing Street, which represents a strong commitment by the British Government in support of the work of the Northern Ireland Executive.

President Obama’s visit to Belfast on Monday will lend considerable momentum to the work ahead of building a cohesive, shared and prosperous society in Northern Ireland.  We owe the United States an enormous debt of gratitude for their contribution to the peace process and it is gratifying that President Obama is building on the work of his predecessors in maintaining US engagement”.

The G8 Summit of World Leaders in Fermanagh will showcase Northern Ireland as a great location to visit, to invest in and do business.

Note for editors

The Economic package announced today commits the British Government and the Northern Ireland Executive to working together in addressing the challenges of rebalancing Northern Ireland’s economy and tackling the long term entrenched divisions in society.  It includes an investment plan, enhanced capital borrowing powers and Government top-ups to EU PEACE IV and Structural Funding.
