Ireland's policy on combating International Terrorism and Illicit Drugs

International Terrorism

Political Division provides policy advice on international cooperation against terrorism.  The Division is responsible for co-operation with international bodies, including the United Nations, on this issue and, together with relevant government departments, it is responsible for monitoring the implementation of United Nations sanctions against persons and entities associated with international terrorism.  It also co-ordinates Ireland’s responses to requests for information submitted by UN Security Council Counter-Terrorism and Al-Qaida and Taliban Sanctions Committees.

At EU level, the Division, working with the Permanent Representation, Brussels, is responsible for the Irish input into the development of the Union’s external policies on combating international terrorism.

The Division works closely within the Department's Legal Division and  other relevant Government Departments, particularly the Department of Finance and the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform.

Illicit Drugs

Political Division provides policy advice on international aspects of the trade in illicit drugs and is responsible for cooperation with international bodies, including the United Nations, in relation to illicit narcotics.

At EU level, the Division is responsible for the Irish input into the development of the Union’s policies on international co-operation on combating the manufacture, transport and sale of illicit narcotics.

The Division works closely within the Department with Legal Division and Embassies, and with other relevant Government Departments, particularly the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform and the Department of Health and Children.
