Minister Andrews meets Burmese Opposition Leader
23/03/1999
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr David Andrews TD, had a meeting today in Iveagh House with Dr Sein Win, Prime Minister in exile of the National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma. Dr Sein Win outlined the difficulties currently facing the democratically elected representatives of the Burmese people, including the Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.
Minister Andrews expressed his continued support for the democratic movement in Burma and deplored the human rights abuses being carried out by the military regime in Rangoon. The Minister referred to the EU Common Position on Burma which, with the full support of Ireland, has recently been strengthened and which imposes certain restrictions upon senior members of the Burmese regime. Minister Andrews also expressed deep concern about the refusal of the Burmese military regime to grant a visa to the British husband of Aung San Suu Kyi.
