Minister for European Affairs, Noel Treacy, T.D. launches new European Constitution website
Noel Treacy TD, Minister for European Affairs, today launched a new website, dedicated to the European Constitution. It can be found at www.europeanconstitution.ie.
Minster Treacy said:
“The launch of this site demonstrates the Government's commitment, to providing the public with all of the information they require on the European Constitution. I look forward to a lively and informed debate on the European Constitution prior to the National Referendum on the issue.
I am convinced that, as people learn more about the European Constitution, they will recognise that it is good for Europe and good for Ireland.
A key information role will be played by the Referendum Commission, which the Government is committed to providing with sufficient time and resources, as was the case prior to the Nice II referendum. The National Forum on Europe is already extremely active and has planned meetings to discuss the European Constitution, throughout the country, over the next few months.”
The new website provides an introduction to the European Constitution and explains its main features. It includes a glossary of terms commonly used in the Constitution. The innovative process through which the Constitution was negotiated through the European Convention and the Intergovernmental Conference is also described. Users are directed towards other Websites for further information.
The Government has already produced an Explanatory Guide to the Constitution and copies of the European Constitution are freely available (both documents can be requested on lo-call number: 1890 426 700). In addition, the Government will shortly be publishing a White Paper on the European Constitution. Further information materials will be produced for nationwide distribution, also.
