Minister Ahern condemns car bomb attacks in Baghdad
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Dermot Ahern T.D., today condemned this morning's car bombs at a bus station and near a hospital in Baghdad, which killed more than 40 people and wounded many more. The Minister offered his condolences to the families of those killed, and expressed his hope that all those who were injured would make a full recovery.
The Minister said:
“This morning's attacks must be condemned by all right-thinking people. It is impossible to remain indifferent to the relentless attacks against the Iraqi people, who are working towards the rebuilding of their country through finalising a constitution. I am appalled that insurgent groups continue to try to provoke chaos in the face of such positive developments.
“These attacks were deliberately planned and coordinated so as to cause the maximum loss of life. Attacks such as these, aimed at civilian targets, are inexcusable.
“Faced with actions of this type, everyone who values democracy knows where they must stand. Ireland, along with our EU partners, will continue to support the Government of Iraq in taking up its very challenging responsibilities and in its efforts to combat such atrocities.”
